I was inspired to write this by Jenna Zaffino’s story in episode 52 of Pilates Unfiltered – I don’t want to put words in Jenna’s mouth so you should listen to the episode after reading this if you’re interested to understand her point of view.
As movement teachers – Pilates professionals, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists – for years we have operated on the assumption that understanding anatomy, physiology and biomechanics are foundational to being an effective practitioner and teacher.
I think this assumption is wrong. You don’t need to know anything about anatomy, physiology OR biomechanics to effectively teach Pilates or help people rehabilitate.
Yep. Anatomy is not important when teaching Pilates. In fact, I think it gets in the way of good teaching.
I will even go so far as to say, you don’t need to know ANY anatomy, physiology or biomechanics in order to be a great teacher and practitioner. The less the better.

I say this as someone who understands and enjoys anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. I have a masters degree in exercise physiology, and I have written extensively on biomechanics-related issues in exercise and rehabilitation, for example, this blog on the biomechanical argument for lifting with a flexed spine.
Here’s the thing though: The only time I actually apply my detailed understanding of muscle anatomy, neurophysiology and biomechanics is to (politely) argue with people that these concepts are not important when teaching movement in a fitness or rehabilitation setting. For example, the whole spinal flexion discussion I linked to in the previous paragraph.
8 reasons we should focus on other things instead of anatomy
For example, instead of asking a client to ‘contract your psoas’, asking them to ‘lift your the knee of your leggings towards the ceiling’ will likely result in better learning.
We also know from motor learning research that, when humans begin to learn a new movement skill, we tend to focus on the individual components – for example when learning to drive we think about what each hand and foot is doing.
As we become more skilful at a particular movement, we represent that movement at a higher locus of control – which is to say we think in more general, or global terms. For example as an experienced driver, you most likely think about what speed you want to go, or which route you want to take, rather than what your hands and feet are doing. This is true for all movement skills.
By asking our clients to focus on the anatomy of a movement, we focus their attention inside their body and draw their attention to the details of the movement., essentially regressing them to an earlier stage of learning. Both of these things retard learning.
2. It reduces endurance
Focusing attention on something external – for example, music, or the results of your movement, increases endurance, compared with focussing on the sensations of moving, which reduces endurance. For example, instead of focussing on contracting a particular muscle, attending to the movement of the reformer carriage, the weight stack or the bar will increase the number of quality reps your client can achieve.
3. It distracts the teacher’s attention from what is important
If you are teaching Pilates and your goal is to improve your clients’ form – that is to say, the shapes they make in the exercises – anatomy is a distraction. If you want to help your clients understand and embody the shape and flow of the exercises, you should focus your attention as a teacher on the shape, and flow of the exercises. Not on the anatomy.
For example in roll-up the spine makes a C, the legs are straight, the ankles flex as you roll up. Further, there is a rhythm to the movement of the arms, head and torso (look through the window). Being able to reel off the names of muscles is not in any way useful for you, or your clients’ understanding of these shapes and rhythms. It is essentially irrelevant. A distraction.
The best way to learn the shapes and rhythms is first, watch someone do it, then try it yourself. Then get feedback (on your shape and rhythm). Then repeat this process a lot. 4. It’s not part of Pilates
Regardless of the science, cueing anatomy doesn’t actually come from Pilates. In Joseph Pilates’ writings, he never mentions the name of a single muscle. Neither does he use the words core or powerhouse. Those came later, and from other people.
The notion of cueing individual muscles came with contemporary Pilates in the 1990s. Contemporary Pilates trainers were influenced by current (at the time) concepts in physiotherapy and exercise science, where cueing individual muscles was the vogue at the time.
In fact in Return to Life with Contrology Joseph says (we must not) “devote ourselves only to the mere development of this or that pet set of muscles, but rather more rationally to the uniform development of our bodies as a whole”.
Ironically physiotherapy and exercise science have largely moved on from cueing individual muscles (on account of the motor learning research above, and also rehab science research below), but the idea seems to have got stuck in the minds and practice of us Pilates folk.
When asked ‘what is this exercise good for?’ I have heard that Joseph Pilates replied ‘It’s for the body!’.His cueing involved mainly demonstration and manual guidance, both of which are now known to be extremely effective teaching tools.
We should be more like Joseph.
5. It gets in the way of rehabilitation
Since the early 2000’s, evidence has been building that what is called the biomedical model – the idea that the human body functions like a clockwork machine – is not our best model for injury and rehabilitation.
The biomedical model assumes that pain is an indicator of tissue damage, or dysfunction (in my view a very problematic term, that is extremely hard to define, but we’ll get into that in another post).
If we take a biomedical view (pain indicates dysfunction or damage) then knowing the anatomy makes sense. In order to fix the anatomy, we need to understand the anatomy.
However, this approach really hasn’t worked.
Since 2003 the best practice, as defined by 15 national clinical guidelines from around the world, including the current Australian clinical guidelines has been to use what is called the biopsychosocial model. The biopsychosocial model of injury and rehabilitation views pain as a complex multifactorial phenomenon, arising from an interactive combination of biological (e.g. tissue status), psychological (thoughts, emotions, beliefs) and social (social support, meaning, engagement) influences.
So, providing the best practice, guideline-based care for your clients with musculoskeletal pain is easy – after they have been screened for red flags (cancer, fracture) reassure them that nothing serious is wrong, and advise them to stay active.
Staying active means doing your normal activities as much as possible. So keep doing your Pilates class, just don’t do a special ‘rehabilitation’ routine to strengthen, stretch or activate any particular muscle.
Just do it ‘for the body’.
6. It scares and confuses teachers
So many teachers get themselves in a tizzy because they feel anxious about their incomplete understanding of anatomy and biomechanics. This is a problem because it is bad for the teachers, all that anxiety is not fun. Also, it is bad for the clients, when the teacher is stressing out and indulging in negative self-talk about anatomy, instead of paying attention and connecting with the client.
This problem is confounded by the next point, anatomy snobbery.
7. It fosters a culture of anatomy snobbery
We all like to be part of the in-group. In Pilates, we often signal that we are part of the in-group by using anatomy jargon. This serves a dual purpose – it builds us up and establishes expertise and social status, whilst at the same time excluding or ‘putting in their place’ those who don’t have the same ability to reel off anatomical terms.
There is pretty much nothing you can say using Latin anatomical terminology, that you can’t say in plain English. Use plain English.
8. Correct muscle activation – not really a thing
Here is another one you may find surprising. It didn’t come from Joseph (he never focussed on any individual muscle or muscle group) and it’s not supported by science.
For any movement task, there are many possible muscle activation patterns that will accomplish the job, and there is no evidence that I have seen (and I have looked) suggesting there is such a thing as an ‘ideal’ muscle activation pattern for any given movement.
There are so many reasons for this. We know from many later studies that muscle activation is

Unless your client is paralysed, this will happen naturally

Roll down slowly and smoothly
Turn your leg out
You don’t need to cue this
Wouldn’t it be wonderfully freeing to not worry about anatomy?
Joseph didn’t worry about it.
Science doesn’t think it’s very useful.
There is no really good reason to worry about it!
Sure, it’s interesting. I love cell biology, and neurophysiology, and the biomechanics of lifting – but I know to keep my interests private, or talk about them only with other people who I know share my interests.
Just like other geeky hobbies that nobody else needs to know about like bird watching, chess, railway spotting and flower arranging; if we love those things, we should indulge in them, but we shouldn’t inflict our hobbies on everyone else or confuse our own interest for usefulness in other areas.
I am currently a week away from graduating from the Breathe Pilates training program. This has been an amazing 20 weeks - so excited and sad it's almost over. It is a great program that really prepares their students to confidently go out and teach. I've seen so much growth in myself from understanding the original repertoire, how to cue to facilitate movement success, and how to competently work with a variety of clients. I have just completed my first module of the Diploma in Clinical Pilates. I found the standard of teaching at Breathe Education is very high. All the lecturers are very highly trained, passionate, knowledgeable, and humble. The course is structured in such a way that promotes fast learning. Difficult, big, and potentially boring topics were broken into digestible clusters, making them less scary and more interesting. Furthermore, the lectures/reviews/tutorials were conducted in ways that were highly engaging. I just finished my second module for Diploma in Clinical Pilates Certificate and I have gained so much skill, skills that is beyond just learning about the anatomy of the human body. Learning about Pain , Understanding Pain through different aspects is just mind blowing.

I finished my Certificate IV of Reformer and Mat pilates on 2021 and keep learning the diploma of Clinical pilates since last August. what a fantastic learning system that all the knowledges are based on science evidences and you won't feel boring on any of the learning parts. I am currently doing the Clinical Pilates Diploma which is the Breathe Education 1-year course for already trained Pilates Instructors. I am four months in at the time of writing this review and I can already say that signing up to this diploma was THE BEST INVESTMENT I've done for my career so far. I wish I knew about Breathe Education at the very start of my Pilates Instructor journey because it's the bomb!The diploma take a year and is structured in 3 modules. To that, I would add a couple of months to go over the optional anatomy pre-course and reading the book "Strengthen the Person not the Body". Again, it's optional but I highly recommend it to get yourself up to speed in anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. It helped me to turn the list of muscles, origins and insertion I had to learn for my initial Pilates Training into ACTUAL UNDERSTANDING of biomechanics and how the body works.Let me warn you, it is a hefty time and money investment but I'd say the money is secondary really, because you get that investment 10x back in terms of added value to your career and it's the time investment that is the real challenge. So, make sure you are READY TO ACTIVELY INVEST YOURSELF in this diploma before signing up. This is not a passive learning course where you can just log on zoom, listen to a presentation, memorise a list of things and pass the exam. This course is beyond learning, it's about learning to learn and it will challenge a lot of what you think you know.I'm only one-module down and I can already answer questions like: What are the current best practices to manage a specific condition/pathology? How can I set my client up for success during and outside sessions? How do I measure outcomes so I can keep pushing my clients in a safe and effective way? Also, now, I can make the difference between pseudo-scientific beliefs and evidence-based guidelines. And most importantly, now I FEEL CONFIDENT that I can keep my knowledge up to date without the need to enrol for yet another $$$ weekender course on the management of X or Y condition. Now, when I don't know about a condition, a syndrome, a pathology, I feel comfortable to go and search directly within scientific literature on any topic, understand what I'm reading and apply those guidelines with my clients.Aside from doing the anatomy pre-course, the main advice I would give to prospective students if you want to succeed in this course is to read about GROWTH MINDSET VS FIXED MINDSET and train yourself to see and deal with new situations as much as possible from a growth mindset perspective as those skills will benefit you immensely for the duration of the course and beyond.I can't wait to go through the next two modules. It's brilliant!
The past few months completing my Certification in Pilates has been the most wonderful experience. Not only have I developed my own knowledge and practice within the Pilates industry, I've also become part of a supportive and passionate community. It was hard to imagine that I would feel this confident and excited after 20 weeks of study but here I am ready to go and words can't express how thankful I am for Breathe Education and their wonderful staff.
I had thought about doing my breathe training for two years before signing up and I’m so glad I did. The course is more than worth the financial output. The support from all of the teachers is incredible, I have felt their support in helping every student succeed and believe in themselves. Distributed Practise in Breathe Education is an amazing tool to achieve automatic recall of exercises for success as a Pilates Instructor. Outstanding trainers and course at Breathe Education and I will miss it when it's over.
I started my Clinical Diploma with Breathe in May. The experience is truly life changing, in my teaching and my own personal growth. I am already a more confident, happier teacher with a clear focus and the tools to change my client's life's and get them results. It is so empowering to know the knowledge you have is up to date and accurate. I love the anatomy, but that is a small part of the course. More importantly you learn practical tools that you can put into place straight away. The style of teaching and delivery of content is like nothing I've experienced before. Raph, Heath and Adam have a knack of making the content clear, fun and easy to understand. There is as much support available as you want or need from the Tutors, support staff and other students. I love connecting with other teachers from all over the World and everyone has been lovely.
I first became aware of Breathe Education in lock down and listening to Pilates Elephants pod casts became compulsory! A lot of things made complete sense and I began to change my thinking to a more clear, logical way of looking at the human body, (as opposed to what I had been told and what I had taken for granted).As a soft tissue therapist and a mat based Pilates teacher, my understanding of movement and how the body works has been greatly expanded!The visualised anatomy course I have recently joined, gives a fresh dimension to learning about the body with clear lecture slides and explanations.
I am still working my way through the course with one module to complete but have found it very helpful in advancing my underrstanding of the human body as a whole and how to use exercise to improve peoples lives phychologically as well as physically
Just 4 weeks into my first 14 week module of the Diploma and I am already feeling more confident with my teaching and more knowledgeable as I work with clients. I'm meeting like-minded Pilates instructors from around the world who are also interested in evidence-based practices. I'm learning from the incredible BE instructors and also from my fellow students. It's an amazing experience so far.
To say that my experience with Breathe Education has been transformative would be an understatement. I first discovered Breathe through their excellent podcast, Pilates Elephants. I learned more about anatomy and pilates from listening to their podcast than I ever had in any of my previous training experiences over the last six years of my pilates career. Deciding to get my pilates certification through Breathe Education was the best decision I could have made. I am wrapping up my undergraduate degree currently, so doing a completely remote certification at the same time was the best option for me. I have ADHD and have always struggled with remote learning, so I was nervous / apprehensive about realistically staying on top of the workload.B.E. has structured this whole program in an organized and efficient manner that makes it hard NOT to succeed. There are weekly practice teaching sessions and tutorials that are required (which is a wonderful thing because of the accountability aspect to stay on top of it)...All the different learning styles were implemented throughout the e-learning material to cater to everyone -- there were podcasts to listen to, video demonstrations, articles to read, written assessments, verbal teaching assessments, and then of course, physical assessments of us actually performing the repertoire. The material within the course has expanded my knowledge greatly, and it was taught in a way that simplified things so that I never felt overwhelmed. Because of this approach, I was able to feel more confident in my abilities throughout the courseAll of the instructors truly care about the success of their students and are very thorough in all of the lectures and master classes. I am considering doing the clinical diploma a little further down the line, and I would absolutely recommend this program to a friend. <3

From the very first day I started my training with Breathe, right up until the end, I received constant support, guidance and reassurance throughout the entire course. My trainer was Hayley who is fabulous. I have made some great new friends and we will continue to support each other now that we are qualified Pilates instructors. Fantastic course highly recommend.

I love the sincerity for the individual that reached out to me to let me know of the scholarship that was happening 🙌 even though we haven't been intouch for a while. That was big to do that, to remember me, when there is so many individuals in the world.
