How to start a solo Pilates business and make great money, with Jean Campbell and Raphael Bender

By Make more money

Being a solo-preneur is a dream for many Pilates instructors. The independence of being a small business owner is appealing, but without calculating the cost correctly, you might be setting yourself up for more hours with less pay than if you remained an employed Pilates instructor. Today we’re joined by Jeanne Campbell–a yoga teacher who has been perfecting her low-cost, minimal hours solo business model for the past two decades. With so much crossover between the yoga and Pilates industries, her advice is highly applicable to anyone looking to start their own solo Pilates business without losing money and working too many hours.

What You Will Learn:

  • A blueprint for a low cost solo business model with almost no overhead
  • Common myths about the cost of running your own business
  • Tips for optimizing your website specifically as a movement professional
  • How to get more clients without pressuring them to come to your classes
  • How to retain clients with commitment agreements and requiring self-practice

The Real Cost of Running a Solo Pilates Business

Starting a small business can be stressful when you put all the figures together, only to realize that you just don’t have enough money. But Jeanne’s blueprint minimizes startup and long-term overhead costs in a way that allows solo-preneurs to work minimum hours and love what they do. She and Raph go through the calculations of starting a solo practice in a realistic way. That means, planning for the worst case scenario. Cancellations, sick kids, and parking issues… these situations happen all the time, so you’ve got to charge an appropriate fee for your classes. If you feel funny charging more, it may be because you lack confidence in your skills. Jeanne and Raph touch on imposter syndrome and confidence issues, and why you’ve got to change your thinking if you want to decrease overhead and increase profit margin.

Commitment for Retention

Jean has a somewhat rigid structure of commitment which she requires clients to adhere to. Sticking to casual drop-in classes and allowing roll-overs seems like the nice thing to do, but it’s also encouraging clients to avoid commitment. Ultimately, it means less bodies in your studio. Jean also shares how she gets clients to commit to coming to classes and doing at-home practice. Ultimately, it lands more money in your pocket, more clients in your studio, and real results for clients. You’ll learn what a commitment agreement looks like, and how to enforce it. It’s tough love, but everyone wins when clients see results and you improve your confidence in your skills… and make more money, too!

Common Mistakes that Stop You From Making Money

Jean goes through the math of owning your own studio with her yoga teacher trainees, and shares what they usually think of as good ways to make money. They often think of teaching at a gym, renting space, and covering other teachers’ classes. But when she reveals the overhead of these endeavors, students are shocked. The most common ways we think to make money as solo-preneurs usually are not the best ways. Jeanne and Raph break down the math of running a brick and mortar studio, website costs, scheduling software, equipment, and more. They offer alternative ways to run a Pilates studio–such as online practice– that save you time, money, and stress.

How to Motivate Your Clients, with Nathan Ross Rees and Raphael Bender

By Become a better instructor

Motivating people is hard. Knowing how to motivate people to exercise is even harder. On this episode of Pilates Elephants, you’ll learn how to fearlessly motivate your clients with evidence-based techniques with our guest, Nathan Rees. Where does our motivation to workout come from? Is it intrinsic or extrinsic? Nate and Raph explore these questions that are vital to your abilities as an instructor and help your clients to see results regardless of their fitness level.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to motivate clients of all fitness and experience levels and fill your classes
  • What should instructors pay attention to during instruction?
  • How to provide individual attention in a large class
  • How much of your instruction should be technical, educational and motivational?
  • How to push clients to their limit and recognize when it happens

Principles of Workout Motivation for New and Experienced Instructors

Nate and Raph discuss the differences between new and experienced instructors in terms of what they focus on during class. We all want to motivate our clients, but new instructors face feelings of insecurity and aren’t as present in the moment as seasoned instructors. They often worry about the functionality of the task so much that they’re out of tune with the clients in front of them. Over time, it’s natural for these feelings to subside as your teaching skills improve. Eventually, you’ll have more bandwidth to focus on the clients in front of you: how hard they’re working, what they need to hear, and how to improve your cueing.

How Can You Tell if You’re Effectively Motivating Your Clients?

Nate offers some practical and easily applicable advice for instructors who want to spend less time explaining and more time motivating. He suggests a healthy ratio of technical instruction to educational and motivational. Once clients are able to grasp the movements, then you can focus on why those movements are beneficial to their wellness and all other areas of their lives. How can you tell if your motivational efforts are working? When clients start to reach muscle failure, you’ll notice physical signs like facial expressions or noises. Nate and Raph discuss why pushing your limits is so important in terms of progress, and how to help advanced level clients continue to see results.

The Power of Social Connection

A huge part of motivation to workout is social interaction. Nate says it’s a key factor in getting clients to show up for class. With a sense of community, people look forward to working out in a whole new way. For this reason, it’s highly important for instructors to know how to welcome new clients into their classes. Nate explains how to make newbies feel welcome by introducing them, making them feel like a part of the crew, and pairing them up with a workout buddy who they may already have something in common with. Social connection is a basic human need, and a healthy community atmosphere in your studio is a powerful way to keep clients coming back.

How Much Does a Pilates Instructor Course Cost?

How Much Does a Pilates Instructor Course Cost?

As a Pilates instructor, you can choose the business you want to run and how you want to share the joy of Pilates with your clients – and that level of freedom is something that is very attractive to people who are looking to become Pilates teachers. Choosing the right Pilates course can be tricky, as you want to get the best value for your investment, which is why it is important to know exactly how much your Pilates instructor course will cost.

Here at Breathe Education, we are proud of the depth of our online Pilates course – and that is why we are confident enough to be upfront about the costs. We have helped more than 3,000 students to go from complete beginners to confident teachers through our online immersive tuition. We are the preferred training providers of industry leaders around the world, and by providing a safe learning environment we create teachers who are sought after by clients and who can walk into jobs straight after graduating.

There are many things to think about when training to become a Pilates instructor, and one of the most important questions to ask is how much does it cost to be a Pilates instructor. Courses can be expensive so it makes total sense to choose your course wisely. When you choose Breathe Education, you can be sure that the price you pay for training will be a small amount when compared with the knowledge and level of proficiency you’ll be taking with you after you finish.

More than Just the Course Cost

When comparing Pilates instructor training cost, there is more to factor in than just how much the actual tuition costs.

In some Pilates courses, there are hidden (and not so hidden) extra costs for additional mentoring, examinations, or help – and this is something to bear in mind when you are considering where to go for your training.

Here at Breathe Education, our training packages represent the complete, final price – no hidden extras, no additional costs for more specialist units, and no cost for personalized one-to-one support. When you are looking at our Certification in Pilates Matwork and Reformer, the cost you see is the full Pilates instructor cost and once completed, you will be ready to take your business and run with it as either a self-employed teacher or as part of a Pilates business as soon as you graduate.

How Much Does It Cost to Become a Pilates Teacher with Breathe Education?

We have a straightforward billing procedure that makes it simple for you to understand the full Pilates teacher training cost. We offer monthly payment plans to suit you, and you can spread the cost depending on your budget.

You can choose to pay straight up or over 6 months or 12 months– and there are no hidden extras. You are closer than you think to being a fully qualified and accredited Pilates teacher with Breathe Education. Reach out to us today and book a call where we can chat more about your specific circumstances and what you want to achieve at the end of your studies.

The New Future of Pilates with Lesley Logan

By Make more money

In this conversation I talk with Lesley Logan of Profitable Pilates and Online Pilates Classes. We share our thoughts on the current situation with COVID-19 lockdown and the closure of Pilates studios around the world.

Both Lesley and I see this as an amazing opportunity to “Reset to Factory Settings”, to let go of things you have been holding on to out of fear or inertia. It is also an incredible time of change and opportunity in the Pilates industry. Things are not going to return to the way they were before – here’s how we think you can take advantage of this seismic shift and turn this into an amazing opportunity for yourself, your teaching, your clients and your business. And we want to encourage you to charge what you’re worth!

Manifesto For The Pilates Industry

By Make more money

These beliefs are our compass: We think they should be yours too

Challenging times call for clear vision, optimism, creativity and agility

  1. The value of an instructor lies not in equipment or premises but in the client’s experience, results, and emotions
  2. Classes are not a public service but an exchange of value and should be priced as such
  3. People can learn physical skills to a high level in a purely online format
  4. The present restrictions will probably continue until the end of 2020
  5. This situation represents a fundamental paradigm shift and a massive opportunity for Pilates instructors, studio owners and the Pilates industry
  6. After restrictions are lifted, things are unlikely to return to the way they were before: The industry worldwide will have new norms, new technologies, new competitors, new consumer expectations, and ultimately a vastly different competitive landscape
  7. We don’t know what the world or the Pilates industry will look like in 12 months, so the best way to prepare for success is to develop agility, resourcefulness and resilience
  8. Instructors and studio owners who wholeheartedly welcome the challenges and leap into the new opportunities inherent in these times will flourish

Online classes have many benefits for clients and instructors including:

  • greater class numbers without crowding
  • no travel time, transport cost, or parking required
  • because of no travel time, classes can potentially be done at any time of day including during work hours
  • increased opportunity for social connection
  • increased geographical catchment area
  • multiple clients in same family can workout together potentially for one price
  • no child-minding needed
  • no queue to sign-in or use the change room
