What separates the top Pilates entrepreneurs from those who don’t quite reach their potential? Well, we’re glad you asked. James Trenerry was kind enough to join us on the podcast and share some of his insights. You’re in for a real treat, as this guy is the real deal. A boundary-pusher himself, James has enjoyed success as a multi-award-winning entrepreneur in the health and wellness space and he’s not shy about sharing his knowledge. According to James, the single most important thing you can do is have a strong team behind you, when you’re first starting out. It’s hard to juggle it all and having someone on hand whom you can trust can make all the difference.

But how do you find good people? In his estimation, it’s best to seek out internal resources. He’s found the most success by hiring clients. It’s probably a waste of time to post an ad on a career site because you likely won’t find the right type of person. Plus the learning curve won’t be as steep and you’ll have the trust factor there.

Another point he makes is that you have to think big. Even when you’re small, you have to think like you’re operating a large, national franchise. You’ve got to have elements of marketing, finance, and community engagement. Then when you do grow, you already have the pieces in place and it’s easier to scale.

Speaking of growth, never lose sight of the fact that your clients are the key to reaching your goals. He discusses the importance of acknowledging each and every person where they are, metaphorically speaking. If you’re running out of content to teach in your classes, you might need to take a step back. This is a sign that you’re not teaching for the people in the room. Remember it’s not about you. If there are 14 people in the room, remember that you’re answering to all of them. They’re the ones that need the help. They’re the ones that are looking to you for the extra motivation and know-how.
