Living Well With Pain
Recapturing fun in your life when suffering chronic pain is no small feat, but it is possible…Today we talk with Dr. Bronnie Lennox Thompson, an incredible practitioner, and researcher in the psychosocial aspects of long-term pain. Bronnie joins us in a fascinating in-depth conversation about her role as an Occupational Therapist and why it’s so important to put academic research out there in a way that the layperson can understand. We also discuss her work in pain management, why she became interested in living well with pain, and how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help people who suffer from chronic pain.
What You Will Learn:
- How to live well with pain
- Why pain isn’t just about physical factors
- How attention affects the experience of pain
- Why the fun aspects of life often disappear for people who suffer from chronic pain
- How Pilates instructors can find out more about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
How ACT Helps People with Pain
Bronnie shares how she has decoupled her pain from suffering and disability using psychological flexibility and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She shares how those techniques have enabled her to get to where she is now with her pain and gives her insights into how they can help other people suffering pain or the practitioners supporting them.
Staying in the Moment with ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has six processes — the first step is being aware of the sensory input in the moment and focusing on the here and now. The process looks at whether a person thinks about themselves as a pain patient and guides them towards the idea that there are many different facets of everyone’s character, and that it’s healthy to express the different parts of who you are.
Another Perspective on Pain
We also discuss how Pilates instructors can access more information and resources about (ACT) and why it might help clients reframe how they feel about their pain.
